History and Philosophy

The company’s philosophy is the production of high-quality wines with absolute respect for the environment and the promotion of the region through them, guided by the long-standing tradition of the Tsikrikonis family and the use of modern scientific methods that ensure high production standards.
Our goal is to highlight indigenous grape varieties abroad.

HISTORY

The Tsikrikonis Winery from its creation to the present day

1965-1970

The first small-scale vinifications begin, aimed at securing the family’s wine supply for the year. The winemaking methods are simple and efficient. The grape berries are separated from the stems and then crushed in large wooden presses. The must is then transferred to oak barrels of 500 and 1000 liters (which are still preserved today as heirlooms) to undergo fermentation.

1950-1960

Theodoros and Chrysanthi Tsikrikonis plant the family’s first vineyards in Myrtofytos—one of the first in the area. The vineyard covers 15 stremmas, and the varieties planted include Rozaki, Muscat, and Bogiamades.

2000

30 stremmas are planted with the varieties Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and one of the first Assyrtiko vines in the region.

1990

For the first time, the family’s wine and tsipouro are given their own name. With the establishment of a modern distillery-winery under the name Myrtofytos S.A., Stathis Tsikrikonis creates one of the first bottled tsipouros, and…

1985-1990

New vineyards covering 15 stremmas are planted with international grape varieties.

1980-1985

Stathis Tsikrikonis, son of Theodoros and Chrysanthi, carries out his first vinification and adds to the family tradition by introducing the distillation and production of Tsipouro. The distillation takes place in a traditional copper still built into a wood-fired oven.

1975

Theodoros Tsikrikonis, together with his son Stathis, plants an experimental 2-stremma vineyard with 25 grape varieties, both Greek and international.

2006

The company adopts its current name, Tsikrikonis Winery, and for the first time, a series of wines under the name GIONOS is bottled.

2007

GIONOS is released to the market for the first time, making its debut through Panagiotis Boulas, nephew of Stathis and son of Eleni Tsikrikoni (the family’s artist), who takes on the promotion and sales of the wines in the Greek market. At the same time, Eleni Tsikrikoni begins her work in PAINTING, creating handcrafted, hand-painted collectible wine bottles that continue to adorn and represent the name of the winery to this day.

2009

ZANTIA (from the ancient Greek word meaning “madness”), a semi-dry rosé wine, is bottled and released for the first time.

2012

The wine family welcomes a new addition: DERTI Retsina. A high-quality white wine infused with natural pine resin, setting it apart from the often “misunderstood” retsinas of the past.

2014

A classic regional blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Assyrtiko is vinified and bottled under the guidance of Thodoris Tsikrikonis, son of Stathis, who, after completing his studies in agronomy and oenology, undertakes his first personal vinification. The wine is named 8.

2015

After years of effort by Stathis Tsikrikonis to revive the old vineyards of the Rozaki variety, the first project takes place. The Rozaki grapes are experimentally vinified by Thodoris Tsikrikonis, and for the first time globally, the variety is bottled and released to the market. The wine is named ROZAKI TSIKRIKONI and bears the designation VARIETAL WINE OF KAVALA. At the same time, 30 stremmas of vineyard are planted with the Assyrtiko and Malagousia varieties.

2016

Two new labels, ASSYRTIKO SINGLE VINEYARD TSIKRIKONI and MALAGOUSIA SINGLE VINEYARD TSIKRIKONI, are bottled and released to international markets.

2017

A New Venture…! For the first time at the winery, the Xinomavro variety makes its debut. Two new experimental vinifications are taking place: a rosé and a red wine made from Xinomavro grapes. In the same year, 784 bottles of the rosé are bottled and released to the market, where they sell out immediately, while at the same time, the journey of the red Xinomavro begins.
